I am writing to urge you to pass strong policies that would help the United States make the transition to a clean energy economy. The next Congress will have the opportunity to address both our economic difficulties and the threat of global warming. Investing in a carbon cap and trade system and a clean energy economy would promote job growth, reduce global warming pollution, and reduce our dependence on oil.

We can make the transition to a clean energy economy by expanding our use of renewable energy and increasing our energy efficiency through increasing the efficiency of our vehicles, buildings, and electrical grid.

The actions that we can take to wean ourselves off fossil fuels and combat further global warming are also actions that benefit us in other ways. A recent study by the University of Massachusetts-Amherst estimated that an investment of $100 billion towards the transition to a clean energy economy would create two million jobs nationwide. This is a winning solution for everyone. Such an investment program could easily be funded through a cap and trade system on greenhouse gas pollution.

We can protect our future from the worst effects of global warming and save our economy at the same time. I am counting on you to take action now.
