Scientists say that we need to take action on global warming within 10 years or we will reach a tipping point when it will be too late to prevent the worst effects of global warming pollution: rising sea levels, an increase in intensity and length of extreme weather events, the proliferation of infectious diseases, and massive extinctions. Carbon dioxide and other heat trapping gases linger in the atmosphere for decades or centuries, meaning that additional pollution will create an almost irreversible warming effect for centuries to come.

I urge you to support the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act of 2007 (S 309), introduced by Senators Sanders and Boxer, and its House companion, the Safe Climate Act of 2007 (HR 1590), introduced by Congressman Waxman.

Scientists agree that unless we reduce global warming pollution significantly in the next 50 years, the predicted rise in average global temperatures by the end of the century will cause unstable and unexpected weather patterns--droughts in some areas, flooding in others, more heat waves, air pollution, wildfires, rising sea levels, melting tundra, outbreaks of disease, and widespread loss of wildlife and their habitats.

S 309 and HR 1590 represent action on the scale we need to prevent the worst effects of global warming by starting to cut heat-trapping pollution now and increasing reductions year by year. Delaying this action will only make the task more difficult and more expensive--and more devastating to not only wildlife but all of us that depend on this planet. The window to act is very small and we must not waste any more time debating this issue. The time to act is at hand.
