Called “America’s Serengeti” for its tremendous biological productivity and diversity, the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most intact and untouched ecosystems in America. Unfortunately, this unparalleled 1.5 million acre habitat has never received permanent wilderness protection. There is currently legislation in both chambers of Congress that would permanently protect the coastal plain as wilderness.

As a constituent, I urge you to support permanent wilderness protection for the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by cosponsoring the Arctic Wilderness Act (HR 39/S 2316). This legislation would grant the Arctic coastal plain permanent wilderness protection that would keep it off-limits to oil and gas drilling.

Called "America's Serengeti" for its tremendous biological productivity and diversity, the coastal plain of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most intact and untouched ecosystems in America. The Arctic Refuge is home to 42 mammal species, including the more than 120,000 head Porcupine herd of caribou; 36 species of fish; and over 160 species of birds. Many of these birds migrate to the coastal plain from all fifty states and six continents to feed and reproduce, taking advantage of the burst of biological growth which blossoms in the long days of the Arctic summer.

Oil and gas development in this unique and fragile habitat can only harm its birds, wildlife, and the people who depend on them. There are better solutions to our energy demands that can both protect nature and help reduce our dependence on oil.

For over 25 years, oil and gas development has continued to threaten this unparalleled habitat. I urge you to permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife refuge by cosponsoring HR 39/S 2316.
