The short explanation of this alert was:
About two weeks ago, we sent you a message encouraging you to attend an important public hearing on July 25 that could decide the fate of the Orange County Foothill-South toll road extension. Well, after a couple of weeks of mixed messages, the federal panel that was to hold that meeting has cancelled the hearing, expressing fears that a high turnout would overwhelm the capacity of the venue.
While the meeting is canceled, public input is still being accepted in writing. We encourage you to use this system to send an email making your opinion heard on the toll road.
Some background: Audubon California opposes the toll road extension because we believe it will cause unacceptable damage to birds, wildlife, and habitat in Southern Orange County – and virtually destroy a state park. Last February, the California Coastal Commission dealt the toll road a ruled that the proposed toll road extension was inconsistent with the Coastal Zone Management Act. Right after that, the agency that wants to build the extension filed an appeal with the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will be making recommendations to the Secretary on this issue, and even though it has cancelled its July 25 public hearing, it will nonetheless be accepting written testimony through Aug. 4.
