The short explanation of this alert was:
Take action today!
During a comprehensive federal environmental review of the Peace Bridge Authority’s (PBA) initial decision to select a 565 foot high cable-stayed bridge over the Niagara River, Audubon and many state and federal agencies raised grave concerns over the potential negative impacts to the regions birds and other wildlife that depend on this Important Bird Area. The Federal Highway Administration agreed and deemed this proposal to be environmentally unacceptable. The PBA listened to these comments, and did the right thing by selecting its second most preferred alternative, the environmentally acceptable lower 3-span arch.
However, soon after this decision was made many officials began exerting pressure on the agencies to reverse their decision, and to reinstate the most environmentally harmful alternative. We need your help now to ensure the environmentally acceptable bridge design in chosen, and the integrity of the National Environmental Policy Act review process is preserved.
Please write a letter of support to the FHWA today, copying the region's elected officials, Congressman Higgins and Senator Schumer, urging them to stick by the original decision and to safeguard wildlife in the Niagara River corridor!
