New Jersey Enacts Legislation to Save Red Knot! Thank you for your interest in this issue. We are pleased to report that on March 25, Governor John Corzine signed legislation to ban the take of horseshoe crabs in New Jersey. The legislation imposes a moratorium on horseshoe crab harvesting in New Jersey until the Red Knot population rebounds significantly. Horseshoe crab eggs are a significant source of food for these iconic shore birds. Over-harvesting of horseshoe crabs has led to a diminished supply of food for the Red Knots and has brought the species to the brink of extinction.
