What's At Stake?

Save Our Swamp

The development proposals called Mirasol, Terafina/Saturnia Falls, and Parklands-Collier are being reviewed by local, state and federal agencies for compliance with wetlands and wildlife protection laws.  However, to date agencies have been unwilling to use sound science, documented by Audubon's and many other scientists, in assessing the huge environmental impacts of these projects. Audubon scientists have found that the loss of these wetlands, along with the cumulative impacts of other illegal projects near Corkscrew, will threaten the continued existence of the endangered Wood Stork rookery at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, the largest in the nation and critical to the species' recovery.  Audubon, along with our coalition partners, Collier County Audubon Society, Florida Wildlife Federation, National Wildlife Federation and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, have two goals: 1) stop these destructive permits, and 2) reform the permitting process to better enable the agencies to use more good science and less politics as a basis for decisions. We are using all the tools at our disposal, including scientific study and science-based advocacy, legal challenges, and public education, to Save Our Swamp.  Your help can, and will, make a difference.
